• 1783— George Washington delivered his farewell address to the Continental Army at Rocky Hill, New Jersey, before disbanding the troops.
• 1889— North Dakota and South Dakota were simultaneously admitted to the Union as the 39th and 40th states.
• 1917— The Balfour Declaration was issued, in which British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour expressed support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
• 1947— Howard Hughes piloted the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat — nicknamed the 'Spruce Goose' — on its only flight, staying airborne for about a mile at 70 feet altitude.
• 2000— The first resident crew, Expedition 1, arrived at the International Space Station, beginning continuous human habitation of the ISS.
